WHAT IS ERASMUS+?

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport, designed to promote learning mobility, cooperation between institutions, and policy development across Europe and beyond.

The programme supports students, academic and administrative staff, youth workers, sports professionals and organisations to gain international experience, build partnerships, and develop skills for personal and professional growth. It has a significant budget and focuses on inclusion, sustainability and digitalisation.

KA171 — International Credit Mobility (ICM)

KA171 (International Credit Mobility) supports short-term mobility between universities in Erasmus+ Programme Countries and Partner Countries worldwide. It enables students and staff to study, teach, or receive training abroad within the framework of inter-institutional agreements. Through KA171, students can complete part of their degree at a partner university, while academic and administrative staff can participate in teaching or professional development visits. Projects are managed by higher education institutions and funded through national Erasmus+ agencies.

Purpose: Strengthen global academic cooperation and internationalisation beyond Europe through structured mobility flows.

CBHE — Capacity Building in Higher Education

Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) funds international cooperation projects that modernise and strengthen higher education systems and institutions, mainly in Partner Countries. Projects are typically carried out by consortia of universities and other stakeholders from multiple countries. CBHE projects focus on curriculum development, governance reform, digital transformation, inclusion, and links between higher education and the labour market. They may also support institutional management, quality assurance, and new teaching methods.

Purpose: Improve quality, accessibility, and relevance of higher education systems through structural and institutional development.

Jean Monnet Actions

Jean Monnet Actions support teaching, research, and policy debate related to European Union studies worldwide. They fund academic modules, chairs, centres of excellence, networks, and policy debate projects focused on EU topics. Activities can include new courses, research initiatives, conferences, and outreach activities that increase knowledge and visibility of European integration and EU policies.

Purpose: Promote academic excellence and informed discussion on European Union affairs in higher education institutions globally.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes (EMJM / formerly EMJMD)

Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes (commonly called Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters) are jointly designed and delivered degree programmes offered by a consortium of higher education institutions across multiple countries. Students study at two or more partner universities and receive a joint or multiple degree upon completion. These programmes include built-in mobility, integrated curricula, and common quality standards. Scholarships are often available for top students globally.

Purpose: Deliver fully integrated, high-level international degree programmes with mandatory mobility and joint recognition.

Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM)

Erasmus Mundus Design Measures provide funding for universities to develop and design new joint programmes that may later become full Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes. This action supports the planning phase, including curriculum design, partnership building, and joint delivery frameworks. It is intended for institutions that are new to Erasmus Mundus or that want to create innovative joint degree structures.

Purpose: Support the creation phase of new international joint programmes and expand institutional participation in Erasmus Mundus.
